Focus area theme: Reduction of Hazardous Substances in Electronic and Electrical Equipment (EEE) and reduce risks due to hazardous substances in EEE
IIWM has undertaken a herculean task of preparing a detailed manual for the recyclers
(Formalized informal sector and Formal sector) in order to streamline and bring about Eco-
Efficiency in this sector. The objective of the E-waste Recyclers’ Manual is to minimize
occupational hazards due to toxic and hazardous substances in E-waste through proper
dismantling and recycling process. This will also serve as pointers to the Electrical and Electronic
Industries to reduce hazardous substances in their products and hence comply with the RoHS
requirement.
This project is being undertaken for two main categories of E-Waste, namely Information Technology and Telecommunication Equipment and Consumer Electrical and Electronics, which are listed under the E-Waste Rules, 2016. For each of the category with the sample equipment, the manual emphasizes on the step by step procedure of the entire dismantling process, the quantity of different components present inside the equipment, the quantification of the hazardous substances present in the components, the hazards and the occupational exposure, occupational safety measures that need to be followed during the dismantling procedure. Based on the above mentioned details, the manual gives suggestions regarding the best recycling technologies that can be adopted by the E-waste Recyclers. This project is also undertaken for the awareness of informal sectors handling E-waste. The manual can also be used by formal sectors.
